1996 Olympic all-around champion Lilia Podkopayeva of Ukraine says her upcoming agenda includes adopting a child in August and preparing for her annual "Golden Lilia" show in October.
Podkopayeva has spent the last few days in California, where she made a special appearance and conducted a camp at the Los Angeles School of Gymnastics in Culver City. Prior to Los Angeles, she visited gymnastics camps in Tupelo, Mississippi and New Orleans, as well as Woodward Gymnastics Camp in Pennsylvania. Podkopayeva then traveled to Las Vegas before heading to California for the weekend. She will return to Ukraine on July 9.
Podkopayeva said she and her husband, Timofey Nagorny, are looking forward to adopting a 7-month-old boy named Vadim. The adoption process should be complete in August, she said.
Podkopayeva said she and Nagorny were inspired to adopt a child based on their work with young people in Ukraine, including orphans and children infected with HIV/AIDS. The couple was especially interested in adopting a child from their hometown of Donetsk, where Vadim was born.
"There are 200,000 kids without parents in Ukraine," said Podkopayeva, whose work often takes her to orphanages and hospitals around her country. "When you see those kids, you feel so badly for them. They look so sad, even when they're healthy. We thought about (adopting) for a long time. We're ready."
After winning the all-around and floor exercise titles at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games, Podkopayeva and her coach, Galina Losinskaya, relocated to the Tampa area. Podkopayeva now spends most of the year in Ukraine, but said she intends to continue working in the U.S. every summer. Losinskaya, who also coached Podkopayeva to the 1995 World and 1996 European all-around titles, recently accepted a new position in Georgia.
When she is in the U.S., Podkopayeva said she enjoys reconnecting with former teammates, competitors and friends. Among them is two-time world event champion Yelena Piskun of Belarus, who named her recently born daughter after Podkopayeva. Piskun and her husband also reside in Georgia.
"Yelena called me in April and said she'd be having a baby in June, and that 'We will name her Lilia, especially because of you,'" said Podkopayeva. "That was so nice. Next year I will definitely come, just to see Lilia. I've seen pictures of her, and she's beautiful - dark skin and dark hair."
In Las Vegas, Podkopayeva attended "two or three shows a day," including Cirque du Soleil's Mystère, Ka, O and Zumanity, among others. Podkopayeva said she and Nagorny enjoyed the opportunity to experience and research Las Vegas shows in person, as they prepare for October's "Golden Lilia" show in Kiev.
Originally conducted as a world-class gymnastics competition, "Golden Lilia" is now a multi-faceted exhibition featuring various disciplines of gymnastics, other sports and numerous dance forms.
"Last year we had performers from different countries, and it was very nice and successful," said Podkopayeva. "We wanted to see how they do it in Las Vegas - what works, and all about the technology. It was hard, but we had to see, do, watch and talk about everything."
Upon her return to Ukraine, Podkopayeva said she has one other item on her agenda: the 10th anniversary of her all-around triumph in Atlanta, on July 25.
"We have to decide how we will celebrate," Podkopayeva said. "I can't believe it's been 10 years. It feels like yesterday."
